THE STATE OF THE ARTThrough the efforts of many early r/c sub pioneers the hobby of r/c model submarining has matured into an enjoyable activity that anyone can participate in. Model submarine hulls, propulsion, ballasting, control, and r/c systems are available today for anyone with the desire to participate in this sport. Until the introduction of the WTC the most difficult task facing the r/c model submariner was designing and building water tight spaces within the model to hopefully keep the equipment dry. As I made my own water tight boxes and helped others with their projects, I began to recognize the need for a standardized, removable water tight container to house everything needed to operate a model submarine. And that's just what our 3 inch diameter water tight cylinder (WTC-3) does, all in one easy to remove and service package. It is our sincerest hope that the acceptance of the WTC concept will contribute to the growth and enjoyment of the hobby of r/c model submarining. Mention must be made here of a national organization, the SubCommittee, whose quarterly newsletter, the Report, stands as your best source of information on what is going on in the field of r/c model submarining. For more information about this fine organization, check out the home page for the SubCommittee: The SubCommittee sanctions several regional and national r/c model submarine regattas and shows held throughout the continental United States and Canada. Back to the content of this article: Unlike the hobbies of r/c car, boat, plane or helicopter building and operation there has yet to be published any book that can be called the definitive 'How To Build And Operate r/c Model Submarines'to refer the beginner to. So, in an attempt to answer many questions about r/c submarining, this site will present discussions on r/c model submarines. And we would love to hear about your model submarine experiences. If possible, please send us some photographs of yourself and model in the work shop and lake. I write the occasional article and write a column for the SubCommittee and will share what your up to with other 'model sub freaks'. Send your correspondence to the below address. We're looking forward to hearing from you. Good Modeling,David and Eleanor Merriman |
