Adam Carlson's 1/16th Japanese Type-A r/c Submarine, Part-4A Report to the Cabal: Today was Adam's last day here, and below is a look at what he's accomplished in one weeks time. At first blush it does not seem like much. However, consider this: he turned the entire hull, less the bow section; carved out and finished the sail and small periscope fairing that tops it; built the horizontal and vertical stabilizers; and also turned and detailed the stern cone. I think he was averaging about four hours sleep per day. As I put these words to monitor, Adam's sound asleep in his seat, some thirty-thousand feet in the air, winging back to Arizona. Ellie and I never had a nicer house-guest!
The only thing I contributed to the 1/16 Type-A project were the two propellers, everything else is Adam's work. He's left things with me to tidy up and complete --that was at my request: I've caught the fire that has obviously infected Adam about this project. I'm keen on seeing the masters completed, tools made, and models built!
Here's a peek at the excellent drawings we used on this project. Rendered by Gene Berger some years ago, they are rich with the little details, which, if followed by the builder, will turn an otherwise simple looking cylinder into an attractive, interesting, and practical r/c submarine model.
Adam left me his Japanese published picture book that has the above (and many, many more) detail shots of the Type-A. That book also features other midget type submarines built and operated by the IJN during the second world war.
For the immediate future I go back and finish some long delayed projects and WTC/SKIPJACK kit production work ( ... as Jonathan, Roger, Kevin, Erich, Matt and others jump for joy!). Time permitting I will work on the masters and get this project off the bench and into the water. |
